I think that the New Year is a blessing! We get the opportunity to start fresh each year if we are willing to let go of past baggage. It is much easier to say than to do, but still a great time to strive to do better.
I've decided to not do resolutions this year. Often resolutions lead to an all or nothing mentality and can set us up for failure. Instead I will work on bettering myself in other ways over a lifetime. I will strive to be kinder to myself. I will cut myself the same slack that I allow others. Why is it that we as humans can beat ourselves up for the same things that we would forgive in others. I will strive to practice self forgiveness and hopefully shed shame and guilt over things in the past that I cannot change. This is the year to embrace the reality that I really do deserve all the goodness that I have been so blessed with instead of feeling guilty for my blessings.
I will honor myself more by surrounding myself with people and activities that bring joy and peace rather than stress and frustration. I will not accept other people's negativity as something I need to believe or embrace in my life. I will learn to say no to people and requests and not feel bad for doing so. I will allow myself more opportunities to tap into my creativity and give my creative being rewarding outlets. I think furniture refinishing and stenciling will be a high priority on my list of things to do this year. I bought a Silhouette Cameo and will explore using that tool as part of my creativity.
I will spend more time reading and less time watching television. I will spend time catching up on novels by favorite authors and hopefully discover a few new authors I will cherish in the future. I will honor my body by making better choices that will lead to me becoming a healthier and happier person. I am hoping to make peace with my imperfections and embrace the wisdom and body that comes with aging. I will resume blogging on interior design and other interests because it helps to feed my soul and creativity.
One of the most important things I started recently and will continue in the new year is keeping a gratitude journal. I recently started reading "The Gifts of Imperfection" by Brene Brown. As a researcher who studies authenticity, shame, and courage, she states that people who keep gratitude journals are much happier than those who don't. I am still reading the book, but I am intrigued by what she calls wholehearted living. Brene Brown writes, “Wholehearted living is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness. It means cultivating the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough. It’s going to bed at night thinking, Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging.”
To have that sense of peace is something that I have never known, but I will work to achieve this to what ever level I am capable of in my life. I want to have the peace and feeling that I am enough just as I am. This is my biggest wish to you too.
